Regional
Hazardous Waste Collection on April 23, 2005.
As
a way to celebrate Earth Day, the 2005 Household Hazardous Waste
Collection Event for the communities of Barrington, Farmington,
Milton, Middleton, New Durham, Northwood, Rochester, Strafford, and
Wakefield will be held on Saturday April 23rd from
8:30 am to 12:30 pm. at the Turnkey Landfill on Rochester Neck Road
in Rochester.
Residents
from these communities can bring up to 10 gallons of their
household hazardous waste to the event. To identify which
products are hazardous, look for the words flammable, corrosive,
explosive, or toxic on the product label.
Products
that ARE HAZARDOUS should be brought to the collection
event including: weed killers/fertilizers; no-pest strips; ant
sprays/ baits; bug/rodent sprays/poisons; flea repellents/shampoo;
bug sprays; houseplant insecticides; oven cleaners; drain/toilet
cleaners; wood/metal cleaners, polishes; rug cleaners; tub, tile,
shower cleaners; beach (laundry); pool chemicals, button cell and
lithium batteries; car wax/polish; creosote; fuel additives;
carburetor/fuel injector cleaners; air conditioning refrigerants;
starter fluids; transmission and brake fluid; oil or enamel based
paint; stains/ finishes; polyurethane; paint thinners and turpentine;
paint strippers/removers; photographic chemicals; fixatives,
adhesives, glues; other solvents.
These
products ARE NOT considered to be hazardous and can be
disposed of by the noted method:
Latex
paint: Use the paint, or dry out can and throw can
away in trash.
Motor
oil: Provisions will be made to open the Rochester Public Works
Facility, 45 Old Dover Road on this day between 8:30 am to 12:30 pm
to Rochester residents only to drop off up to 10 gallons of
used motor oil for recycling. Proof of residency is required. For
the collection center in the other communities, contact
your municipality or call NHDES
toll free at 1-888-825-3645.
Zinc
carbon and alkaline batteries: Batteries
sold after May 1996 are non-hazardous and can be placed in the trash.
Household
Batteries: For the disposal locations
nearest you, visit www.rbrc.org or call
1-800-822-8837. Be sure to place each battery in
a plastic bag or put electrical tape over terminals.
Car
batteries: Most places that sell car batteries
will take them back. Some communities may have battery collections.
Call your local town office or NHDES for
details.
Propane
tanks: return to a place that sells them.
