Recycling Committee Minutes 04/03/08 Approved 08/25/08
Present were members Ben Edwards, Doug Chamberlin, Chair Jim Vaillancourt, Selectmen liaison Ken Curley and Transfer Station Supervisor Steve Preston. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall by Chairperson Vaillencourt. REPORTS BOS Liaison Report: Mr. Curley stated the draft Transfer Station Supervisor Job Description was discussed by the BOS at their April 1st meeting. It was noted that the word ‘operators’ should be changed to ‘operations’ in the last sentence of the third paragraph Transfer Station Supervisor Report: Damaged Equipment - Mr. Preston informed the committee that there was damage done to one of the compactors by the driver from Lamprey. It will be repair in the next week. Plastics - Mr. Preston said he has obtained a bin for recycling plastics and will be setting it up as soon as he makes room for it by having the refrigerators taken away. Swap Shop - Mr. Preston stated that a warrant article calling for a swap shop at the transfer station was passed at Town Meeting. He will be clearing out the shed by the burn pits so it can be used for the swap shop. Signs - Mr. Preston said he has new signs and is waiting for the ground to clear before installing them. NEW BUSINESS Brainstorming - Chair Vaillencourt said he wanted to brainstorm for new concepts and ideas about implementing recycling at the transfer station. The committee discussed many issues including: A procedure for implementing new programs Effective ways of informing the public How to increasing recycling Defining metrics The possibility of having an informational Kiosk Commingling recyclables program Setting committee priorities Plastics - The committee agreed with Mr. Preston that the program to recycle plastics should be the top priority. The plastic recycling program will start on May 5th, starting April 14th flyers describing the program will be handed out.
Swap Shop - The committee agreed that the swap shop should be scheduled to open on June 2nd, starting May 12th flyers describing the swap shop program will be handed out New Members - Chair Vaillencourt said there are two vacancies on the committee, he will write an article for the Suncook Sun describing the new recycling programs, asking for volunteers and people who would like to join the committee. The next meeting is scheduled to be held at Town Hall on Thursday, May 8th, at 7 pm. The meeting adjourned at 7:45pm. |
