Minutes of August 3, 2009

Approved September 3, 2009

The meeting began at 6:45.

Jim Vaillancourt, Margaret Walker, Lucy Edwards and Barbara Desautels were in attendance.

The July minutes were approved as amended.

Barbara has been sworn in as an alternate member of the committee.

Jim presented his revised version of the cash register procedures.  He ran into some issues with how to get memory out of the cash register. It seems that the memory chip cannot be removed from the machine, a computer has to be hooked up directly to the machine to download the records. For now, the committee decided to go with a paper printout of the money taken in per department and manually put that information  into a spreadsheet to compile a record.  Margaret moved and Barbara seconded a motion to authorize Jim to present the new procedure to the selectmen for approval.  Jim will let us know when he can get on the agenda.

JIm filled us in on the tool swap, which despite some glitches in the publicity, went rather well.  Jim's conversations with people were encouraging, many thought it was a great idea. We agreed that we could have used more lead time for more publicity and a lot more handouts at the transfer station.  It was suggested that we might have regularly scheduled swaps that could be listed on the brochure, once or twice a year on a regular schedule.  Or perhaps we could use the Swap Shop and do a different category for each week or month.

We discussed getting ready for budget season and what we would like to see in the transfer station budget for 2010.  A set of scales for weighing construction debris was the main item.  Perhaps the town could rent a set a scales and try them out for a week or two to see how it works and what the reaction of the users would be.  We discussed a baler, but came to a conclusion that at the time the way we are handling plastics and other bale-able item is working for now. Jim suggested perhaps meeting with other  local area towns to discuss what they are doing that works and doesn’t re: recycling and also exploring combining resources. Jim will do some research into this with the town administrator.

Jim also mentioned that Steve would like to have another roll-off container for compactor.

The next meeting will be Wed. Sept. 2 at 6:00 at the Library.

The meeting adjourned at 8 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
  Lucy Edwards
