    General Information

    The Administration Department is responsible for Town Hall reception and mail processing duties, property assessing, and public access TV coordination and programming. Department staff also provides support to the Building Department.  

    The overall day to day municipal operations of the Town are managed by the Town Administrator, who is appointed by the Board of Selectmen.

    General Information

    The Northwood Human Services Office provides assistance to qualified individuals for basic living needs in accordance with N.H. R.S.A. 165 and the Town of Northwood General Assistance Guidelines and Basic Needs Policy.  The Town of Northwood Human Services Guidelines were established to ensure that those residents who have a need for financial assistance can obtain funding from the Town in an appropriate manner.  The objective is to provide assistance to those who qualify and to assist them in obtaining long-term financial security through other available resources.

    What is the difference between State and Local Welfare?

    State Welfare:  The NH Department of Health and Human Services is a State Welfare program that includes Food Stamps, FANF/FAP (Financial Assistance for Needy Families/Financial Assistance Program), Medicaid, APTD (Aid for the Permanent and Totally Disabled), Title XX (Child Care), OAA (Old Age Assistance), etc.  If you live in Rockingham County, you may call the Portsmouth District Office at (603) 433-8300 to find out if you are eligible for any of these programs.

    Local Welfare:  Every city and town in New Hampshire has a local welfare office where an individual may apply for emergency assistance in compliance with RSA 165.

    What is Fuel Assistance (FAP) and how do I apply for it?

    The Community Action Program provides income eligible households with assistance in paying home energy bills (oil, kerosene, natural gas, propane, wood, electricity, and/or coal) during the winter heating season.  FAP (Fuel Assistance Program) prioritizes households with at least one member who is elderly, disabled and/or a child under age 6.  Eligibility is based on household size, household income, and annual home energy costs.  Homeowners and renters (including renters with heat included) may be eligible for FAP.  If you live in Rockingham County you may contact Rockingham Community Action Program at (800) 639-3896 or (603) 436-3896.

    Are there food pantries in the area?

    Yes, the Town of Northwood has its own Food Pantry located here at the Town Hall.  You may call (603) 942-8912 Monday - Friday to schedule an appointment.

    How can I apply for Public Housing and Section 8?

    For information about HUD Section 8 low-income housing please contact the NH Housing Finance Authority at (800) 439-7247.

    How can I contact the Homeless Shelters in the area?

    The Homeless Hotline, operated by the Community Services Council of New Hampshire, provides New Hampshire’s homeless with live voice assistance from trained information and referral specialists.  These specialists help homeless persons locate emergency shelter during periods of crisis and assist persons already being served in shelters, to find and locate services within the community.  The Homeless Hotline provides assistance in locating emergency shelter; help for families facing eviction; aid in finding help for housing, financial assistance, transportation, utilities, food, fuel or other crisis circumstances; Referrals to local and state welfare departments; Referrals to security deposit loan programs; Referrals to other social service agencies and Referrals to housing assistance programs or other permanent housing service.  You may contact the Homeless Hotline at (800) 852-3388 for further information or emergency needs.

    General Information

    The Northwood Recreation Department provides safe, fun, and cost effective activities for the residents of the Town of Northwood. The goal of the Department in providing these activities is to bring the community together and offer healthy programs for all ages. Our hope is that the community enjoys the activities that are offered!

    The Northwood Recreation Department is overseen by the Northwood Recreation Commission .

    Volunteering Opportunities

    The Recreation Department does have many volunteer opportunities. The Recreation Commission meets once each month and is open to the public. The commission is currently in need of active members as well. Also, if you are interested in volunteering for a specific activity, coaching a team, or sharing one of your skills with the community, we would love to have you on board.

    The Recreation Department is committed to providing a variety of programs and events to the community.  Watch the Documents and Forms section for upcoming events and programs!

    Registration is required in advance for all programs, unless otherwise noted.  Registration Forms can be downloaded from the Documents and Forms section or can be obtained at the Town Hall.  Please return all registration information to the Recreation Department.

    Program Cancellation Guidelines

    If the Town of Northwood’s school system is closed then all of the programs for the day are canceled.  Assume that there is no make up day unless otherwise noted on prior program postings.  If the program is scheduled for a day when school is normally not in session, then program cancellations will be communicated through WMUR and WOKQ.

    Beach Passes

    The Northwood Transfer Station sticker is also the Beach Pass. These may be obtained at the Town Clerk's office. Out of town residents interested in using the Northwood town beaches may purchase passes for Northwood Lake at the Town Hall for $50.00. These passes are good for the whole season.

  • Recycling/Transfer Station  ( 23 items )

    General Information

    Recycling is strongly encouraged and, as of June 20, 2001, required in the Town of Northwood. Recycling not only keeps unnecessary waste out of landfills, it saves tax dollars. The Northwood Board of Selectmen is advised on waste management and recycling issues by the Recycling Committee.

    Directions

    The Recycling/Transfer Station is 1/2 mile east of the Town Hall on the right side of First New Hampshire Turnpike (Route 4). Look for the blue sign that says "Information 500 Feet" on the right side of the road. What was the Northwood Information gazebo is at the entrance of the Recycling/Transfer Station.

    Swap Shop

    The purpose of the Swap Shop is to stop putting things in the waste container that someone else can use.  It is for residents only. Items must be clean, small enough to fit in the building, useable, and/or in good working order. No junk allowed!

    Items are to be presented to the attendant for inspection. A fee must be paid for TV’s and any other item requiring a fee. After being inspected, residents must place the item neatly in the building. Items are free to other residents. Items are taken at no guarantee of ability to function as expected. The Town assumes no liability for any result from the use of said items. If the item is not picked up by another resident, it will be  disposed of at the attendant’s discretion.

    The following items are prohibited: refrigerators, freezers, appliances, computer monitors, air conditioners, sofas, mattresses, hazardous waste, paint, cleaning fluid, batteries, all liquids, tires, car parts, pornographic material, weapons, and anything perishable.

    General Information

    "Every town at the annual meeting shall choose, by ballot, a town clerk, who shall record all votes passed by the town while he remains in office, and discharge all the duties of the office according to law." - New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated Chapter 41 Section 16

    "Every collector of taxes shall keep in suitable books a fair and correct account in detail of the taxes due, collected, and abated, and of all property sold for nonpayment of taxes, which books shall be public records" - New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated Chapter 41 Section 35

    The office of town clerk can be traced back in its origin to the first settlements in the State, which were made under proprietary land grants in the Province of New Hampshire.

    Today the major duties of the clerk include caring for and preserving the town records, recording vital statistics, issuing permits and licenses, and acting as an election official. The Town Clerk registers all motor vehicles except off road vehicles, motor scooters and mopeds. The Town Clerk also issues motor vehicle plates. Other duties include writing reports, administering oaths, and furnishing information to townspeople and to other local and state officials.

    The Tax Collector's major duties include the issuance of all taxes assessed to property owners such as property, current use, yield, excavation and resident taxes. The office collects all monies owed on taxes current and past due. The office is charged with the liening and deeding process on all past due taxes as prescribed by the RSAs.

    The Town of Northwood has a combined office of Town Clerk/Tax Collector pursuant to RSA 41:45-a. The Town Clerk/Tax Collector has the duties of both offices. The Town Clerk/Tax Collector is elected to a three year term. The offices are located at the Town Hall on the lower level accessible from the rear of the building.
